The key to this design lies in the elasticity, flexibility, and durability of leather. It not only enables the furniture to carry the weight of the human body but also allows it to be shaped freely. Breakthroughs in leather testing have eliminated processing and leftover materials, allowing for the free disassembly of each part to minimize unnecessary wastage.
What sets Tactile of Sense Liven apart is its focus on the user experience. Instead of mass-producing products, the designers invite users to learn the manufacturing process of furniture and experience it with their own hands. In response to the contemporary DIY culture, they have created an open-source sequential design that allows users to participate freely in the design and manufacturing process, fostering an emotional connection between the creator and the creation.
The design transcends the boundaries of traditional leather crafts by making good use of elasticity, pliability, and durability. The floral bud unit and the flower pistil plug-in can be freely disassembled, minimizing unnecessary part wastage. This modular approach allows users to customize their furniture creations, creating a unique bond between the user and the design.
Tactile of Sense Liven was realized using leather crafts and innovative manufacturing techniques. The designers have reimagined the sequential leather components and introduced an open-source design concept, empowering users to build their own furniture creations.
The project, which started in April 2018 and finished in August 2018 in Taipei, was driven by a desire to redefine the making of leather products. By involving users in the design process and creating an emotional connection, the designers aim to produce the IKEA effect, where users assign greater value to the products they have participated in creating.
One of the challenges faced during the design process was the elimination of processing and leftover materials. Through breakthroughs in leather testing, the designers were able to achieve this goal, allowing for the free disassembly and reassembly of modular parts. Additionally, the creation of cutting dies reduced the production time, making the design process more efficient.
Tactile of Sense Liven focuses on the leather industry and collects scrap leather to create upcycled furniture. The designers utilize various manufacturing methods such as stretching, folding, and waxing to shape the floral bud unit. Through multiple attempts to fold and adjust the shape, they achieve the most appropriate curvature to support the weight of a human body, resulting in a beautiful finish and texture over time.
This exceptional design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2019. The award acknowledges the well-designed, practical, and innovative nature of Tactile of Sense Liven, which meets professional and industrial requirements. Respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, this design contributes to a better world by providing fulfillment and positive feelings.
